Frequency and duration of home hemodialysis sessions

Home schedules are usually more frequent and gentler than in-centre dialysis, which is one of the main reasons patients feel better on them.

What to know

  • Conventional home schedule: three sessions a week, roughly four hours each.
  • Short daily: five to six shorter sessions a week, often two to three hours.
  • Nocturnal: longer, slower sessions overnight while you sleep, typically six to eight hours.
  • More frequent dialysis removes fluid more gently, which reduces cramping, crashes and post-session fatigue.
