Steps of a home dialysis session

Every session follows the same sequence, and the sequence itself is a safety mechanism.

What to know

  • Prepare: hand hygiene, clean surface, gather and check supplies, record pre-treatment weight and blood pressure.
  • Set up: load the dialyser and bloodlines, prime the circuit, enter the prescription, complete the pre-treatment checklist.
  • Connect: prepare the access, cannulate, secure needles, start the blood pump slowly.
  • Monitor: blood pressure and machine parameters at set intervals throughout.
  • Disconnect: rinse back, remove needles, achieve haemostasis, record post-treatment weight.
  • Finish: disinfect the machine, dispose of waste, complete the session log.
