Managing fluid removal and ultrafiltration

Ultrafiltration is how dialysis removes the fluid you have gained between sessions, and the rate matters as much as the total.

What to know

  • The target is set from your weight gain since the last session and your prescribed dry weight.
  • Removing fluid too quickly causes cramps, low blood pressure and long recovery times.
  • Large interdialytic weight gains force higher removal rates — controlling fluid intake between sessions directly improves how sessions feel.
  • Dry weight is not fixed. Tell your nephrologist if you are consistently cramping or consistently oedematous.
