Disconnection is where blood loss and air entry risks are highest, so the sequence is followed exactly, every time.
What to know
- Stop the blood pump before opening any connection.
- Rinse back with the prescribed saline volume so blood is returned rather than discarded.
- Remove needles one at a time, applying pressure to each site immediately.
- Hold pressure for 10 to 20 minutes without peeking; check for haemostasis only after that.
- Record post-treatment weight, blood pressure and the actual fluid removed.
