When to go to hospital

Some symptoms need a hospital, not a phone call — knowing which in advance removes the hesitation.

What to know

  • Chest pain, severe breathlessness, or an irregular heartbeat.
  • Bleeding that will not stop with sustained direct pressure.
  • Loss of consciousness, confusion, seizure or new weakness.
  • Fever with rigors, particularly with a catheter in place.
  • A missed session combined with breathlessness or significant swelling.
