Managing bleeding emergencies

Needle dislodgement or line separation during a session can cause rapid, major blood loss. Speed of response is everything.

What to know

  • Stop the blood pump immediately and clamp the lines.
  • Apply firm direct pressure to the bleeding site.
  • Call emergency services if bleeding is not controlled quickly.
  • Secure needles properly at every session and keep the access site visible, never covered by a blanket.
  • A moisture sensor is strongly recommended for nocturnal dialysis.
