Bloodstream infection is one of the most serious risks in dialysis, and almost all prevention happens at the access.
What to know
- Hand hygiene and full aseptic technique at every cannulation, without shortcuts.
- A fistula carries a far lower infection risk than a catheter — this is why fistulas are preferred.
- Never touch the access site after skin antisepsis.
- Report fever, rigors or access redness immediately; treat these as urgent.
- Keep hepatitis B and other recommended vaccinations current.
