What to know
- Phosphate binders only work when taken with food — a binder taken an hour later does nothing.
- Use a weekly pill organiser and set alarms; relying on memory across a dozen medications fails.
- Bring every medication, including supplements and herbal remedies, to each review.
- Never start an over-the-counter medication without checking — many need renal dose adjustment or are contraindicated.
- If cost or side effects are stopping you taking something, say so. There are usually alternatives.
