Regular access site evaluation

Scheduled access surveillance detects narrowing before it causes a clot, and a clotted access often cannot be salvaged.

What to know

  • Clinical examination at every review: thrill, bruit, arm swelling, aneurysm and skin integrity.
  • Trends in venous pressure and achieved blood flow are early technical warnings.
  • Ultrasound or angiography when surveillance suggests a problem.
  • Angioplasty performed early is a routine day procedure; a late presentation is not.
