High potassium can cause dangerous heart rhythm problems; high phosphate damages bones and blood vessels over years.
What to know
- High-potassium foods commonly include bananas, dates, potatoes, tomatoes, oranges and dried fruit.
- Leaching and boiling vegetables reduces their potassium content.
- Phosphate is highest in processed foods, colas, dairy and preserved meats — additives absorb far more readily than natural phosphate.
- Take phosphate binders with food, not after it. Timing is what makes them work.
- Never change binder doses yourself based on how you feel; go by your blood results.
