Managing fatigue and energy levels

Fatigue is the symptom dialysis patients report most, and it usually has identifiable, treatable causes.

What to know

  • Common contributors: anaemia, inadequate dialysis, poor sleep, depression and low protein intake.
  • Frequent home schedules typically shorten post-session recovery time considerably.
  • Ask for anaemia management review — haemoglobin, iron studies and ESA dosing.
  • Protect sleep: consistent bedtime, a dark cool room, and screening for sleep apnoea if you snore.
  • Report persistent fatigue as a clinical symptom. It is not something to simply accept.
