Fluid gained between sessions has to come off during them, and large gains are what make sessions uncomfortable.
What to know
- Everything liquid at room temperature counts: water, tea, coffee, soup, ice, yoghurt, jelly.
- Aim for the interdialytic weight gain your care team sets rather than a fixed millilitre figure.
- Reducing salt is the most effective way to reduce thirst.
- Use small glasses, ice chips, sugar-free gum and rinsing without swallowing to manage thirst.
- Weigh yourself at the same time daily to catch a rising trend early.
