Label reading for dialysis-friendly foods

Most excess sodium and phosphate in a renal diet arrives through processed food, and the label is where you catch it.

What to know

  • Look for ingredients containing "phos" — phosphoric acid, sodium phosphate — these are highly absorbable additives.
  • Check sodium per 100g rather than per serving, since serving sizes are inconsistent.
  • Beware "low sodium" and "lite" salt products; many substitute potassium chloride, which is worse for you.
  • Fresh and minimally processed food avoids most of these problems entirely.
