Home hemodialysis is the same treatment given in a dialysis centre — blood is cleaned through a dialyser and returned to your body — performed in your own home, on a schedule you and your nephrologist agree together.
What to know
- A machine pumps blood through a dialyser, which removes waste products and excess fluid, then returns the cleaned blood to you.
- The clinical process is identical to in-centre dialysis. What changes is the location, the schedule, and who performs it.
- Sessions may be run by a trained care partner or, as with Trivita's service, by a dialysis nurse who comes to the home for every session.
- Programmes that ask families to dialyse themselves train them over four to eight weeks. Trivita's service is nurse-assisted, so no training period applies — the nurse performs the treatment.
