Patency means blood is still flowing well through the access. Narrowing develops silently, and surveillance catches it before it clots off.
What to know
- A weakening thrill, changing bruit pitch, or arm swelling all suggest narrowing.
- Rising venous pressures or falling blood flow during sessions are early technical warnings.
- Prolonged bleeding after needle removal often means outflow obstruction.
- Narrowing found early is usually treatable with angioplasty; a fully clotted access often is not.
