Depression affects a large proportion of dialysis patients, is frequently missed, and responds well to treatment.
What to know
- Warning signs: persistent low mood, loss of interest, sleep and appetite change, hopelessness, withdrawal.
- Symptoms overlap with uraemia and anaemia, so a medical review comes first.
- Talking therapies and medication both work; some antidepressants need renal dose adjustment.
- If you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your care team or emergency services immediately.
